ABOUT THE RESOURCE
This PowerPoint presentation, with notes for trainers, is designed to support public librarians in delivering engaging, informative and practical training on safe use of Youtube for young people aged 12 and above.
The objective of the presentation is to help young learners understand how to use YouTube safely for entertainment, learning, and creativity, while recognizing common online risks, including misleading titles, scams, unsafe interactions and manipulative advertising. The training session should take approximately 60–90 minutes, depending on the amount of discussion and interaction. Facilitators are encouraged to pause regularly during the session, to ask questions, invite learners to share their experiences, and discuss real-life examples that make the content more relevant and engaging.
The presentation is structured around the following sections:
- Warm-up and introduction: Interactive activities exploring learners' YouTube habits and the positive ways YouTube can be used for learning, creativity, and entertainment.
- Understanding online risks: Identifying inappropriate content, scams, clickbait titles, influencers and sponsored content, AI-generated videos, and other misleading information on YouTube.
- Smart and responsible viewing: Practical tips for using YouTube safely and responsibly.
- Hands-on activity: a practical activity for identifying safe and positive YouTube channels.
