We have updated the EIFL checklist of good practices in using the free and open source software, Open Journal Systems (OJS), for managing the entire researcher-to-reader workflow for submission, peer review and production of scholarly journals.
The checklist, by Iryna Kuchma, Manager of the EIFL Open Access Programme (EIFL-OA) and Milica Ševkušić, EIFL-OA Project Coordinator, takes forward an objective of EIFL’s strategic plan - to foster the creation and maintenance of open public infrastructures that enable the publication and sharing of research in open access journals and open repositories. OJS is the most widely used journal publishing software in EIFL partner countries and worldwide.
This is the fourth version of the checklist. It includes an overview of the latest release of OJS 3 (OJS 3.5.0-3 released on 19 December 2025) and tips on software plugins, journal procedures and policies, system security and content preservation, usage statistics, and suggestions for improving content accessibility, visibility and discoverability. It also includes a section about indexing your journals in DOAJ (Directory of Open Access Journals) and Google Scholar and best practice recommendations on OA journal publishing.
OJS is created by the Public Knowledge Project (PKP), which is a multi-university initiative developing free and open source software to improve the quality and reach of scholarly publishing.
