What do libraries have to do with development goals?

Knowledge and information are essential for development. Community-based public libraries are the main – often the only – places where people can go to find knowledge and information.

Today’s public libraries provide a wide range of services and programmes that contribute to community development, and public access to the internet, digital devices and tools. They offer digital and information literacy training and advice to bridging the digital divide. Through innovative services and use of ICT, public libraries are helping job-seekers find work, health workers to heal their patients, farmers to increase their yields; and schoolchildren to improve their learning outcomes and pass exams, and more.

Public libraries are a vital link between communities and sources of reliable information, research and support from government and civil society organizations. They play a key role in preserving and promoting local cultures and heritage. They also provide spaces where people can meet and share knowledge and experiences.
